Benefitting from BIM?

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. Those involved in the building process are constantly challenged to deliver successful projects despite tight budgets, limited manpower, accelerated schedules, and limited or conflicting information. The BIM concept envisages virtual construction of a facility prior to its actual physical construction, in order to reduce uncertainty, improve safety, work out problems, and simulate and analyze potential impacts. It has been adopted in schemes from cradle to construction and seems to be making 2D CAD drawings obsolete.

BCO NextGen in London invite you to attend a panel discussion with representatives from the modelers, consultants and clients. We will look at the advantages and constraints with incorporating such systems and the impacts felt on both businesses and potential new schemes.

The event will feature a five minute presentation of the panels’ experience and opinions of using the system in practice. Questions will then be posed along the lines of:

  • How does BIM improve over traditional coordination for architect & engineers?
  • Does BIM offer what the software developers promised or do we need a dedicated package for this?
  • Is it easier with BIM
  • Are practices ready to fully use this system?
  • Does it over complicate simple coordination?
  • What advantages does this have for the end user/users?
  • What is the BCO doing around this subject?

The Panel will include:

Simon Rawlinson (session chairman)
Head of Strategic Research; EC Harris and Chairman of the BCO’s Research Committee
Rob Charlton Chief Executive; Space Group (BIM Architects)
James Pellatt Head of Projects; GPE
Marc Walker UK BIM Development Manager; WSP
