BCO London Talk & Tour: The Salvation Army Territorial Headquarters

Sitting adjacent to The Salvation Army’s Grade-II listed, Giles Gilbert Scott-designed training college in Denmark Hill, the new territorial headquarters is an elegant, sustainable home for the organisation, designed to reflect its values and stand the test of time.

Spanning six storeys, the building blends elegance and functionality, providing a modern home for the charity while honouring its historic context. The refined materiality, predominantly featuring brick, GRC, glass, concrete, and timber, pays homage to the site’s architectural heritage, ensuring seamless integration within its surroundings. At the heart of the headquarters lies a central light atrium, around which the various functions of the building are organised. This open space serves as a social hub for the office alongside flexible workspace, informal meeting areas, a public café, and a rooftop terrace offering breathtaking city views.

The new headquarters not only embraces modern ways of working but also prioritises well-being. The open-plan layout fosters collaboration and inclusivity, with ample breakout spaces and panoramic vistas encouraging staff connectivity. Sustainability is at the forefront, with material efficiency and longevity optimised, energy-efficient systems in place, and a concrete structure designed for a 120-year lifespan.
