BCO London Talk & Tour: The Northcliffe

The Northcliffe is situated on Tudor Street, near Fleet Street, an area at one time described as ‘a leading avenue of the brain world of London.’ It was built between 1925 and 1926 as the headquarters of the Daily Mail newspaper, and had not been redeveloped since 2001.

JRA re-positioned The Northcliffe, preserving the grade II listed Daily Mail facades and extending the office space on the upper floors. The team relocated the main entrance to draw visitors into the heart of the revitalised reception and reconfigured the atrium to provide amenity space including lounge areas, a library, and a quiet room. Designed for a post-pandemic context, JRA capitalised on the building’s 1920s, post-war heritage by capturing the era’s roaring reputation using innovative designs across the 200,000 sq ft office space. These include a range of work space styles, flexible floor plates to allow for distancing and cellularisation, touch free technology, and maximum fresh air and daylight. All of these spaces have been imbued by an opulence that signals the new period we are entering. The building is completed by three new landscaped roof terraces on the upper levels, bringing biodiversity into the City of London and providing an extensive external amenity for office tenants. The completed project is incredibly sustainable, attaining BREEAM Outstanding certification, which less than 1% of refurbished buildings achieve.
