Technical Tour – Microsoft Building 5, Reading

http://www.bco.org.uk/uploaded/fitout2.jpgThe 8,000m² headquarters, which can accommodate up to 700 staff, was planned to improve flexibility, collaboration, technology and identity, which, in turn, will aid staff attraction and retention.

The project involved a culture shift away from cube-style desks to open plan benches, which offer efficiency and ease of configuration and encourage short ad hoc meetings. Enclosed spaces towards the centre, with workspaces around the perimeter, allow users full advantage of natural light and views. Whilst Microsoft collaboration tools and branding have enlivened the space and differentiate the floors.

Sustainability was an important consideration and efforts have gone into recycling, low carbon technology and sustainable materials during the entire project.

The BCO Judges were particularly impressed that “it focuses on productivity rather than showiness; flexibility rather than opulence”.
