Green Sky Thinking Week: Planning strategies to build human and social capital

Sustainability strategies for the property sector, until recently, have largely focused on managing environmental impacts. This has led to the dominance of environmental rating systems such as BREEAM and carbon reduction targets for planning. However, expectations are rapidly changing. Greater awareness of wellbeing, the Social Value Act and local demands for better integrated communities are shifting the sustainability priorities towards impacts on people.

This event will explore the need for a greater focus on developing human and social capital in urban development; and how the industry can put people at the centre of sustainability strategies. A panel of experts (including a developer, planning consultant and sustainability specialist) will explore the impact a people-first approach could have on development and regeneration. Ideas will be sought for how planning strategies could further help to build human and social capital, with reference to case studies.
