Better Health and Well-being: Higher Productivity

People spend, on average, 90% of their time in buildings which gives architects and engineers an opportunity to positively affect people’s health and wellbeing. ‘Wellbeing’ is a comprehensive term that encapsulates a hierarchy of needs that includes physiological, psychological, social and personal needs (Maslow, 1943).

Derek Clements-Croome, University of Reading, will kick off the seminar, focusing on designing for better creativity and productivity. Patrick Bellew, Atelier Ten will then present on WWF-UK’s Living Planet Centre, winner of BCO’s National Innovation Award in 2016. Mike Beaven of Arup, will focus on the Well Being Standard and John P Buckley, University Centre Shrewsbury, will then turn to medical evidence on active working. Jamie Anderson, Buro Happold and University of Cambridge, will present on Flourishing Environments and Farzana Huda will explore the impact of lighting on health and wellbeing. The talks will conclude with Eleni Soulti, BRE, who will focus on health and wellbeing in BREEAM. The event will finish with a question and answer session.
