BCO Technical Tour – Vulcan House, Sheffield

Timings: 16:00 – 18:00

This purpose built office combines an ideal working environment within a unique landmark design in terms of environmental awareness and responsibility.

The first project in Sheffield to be BREEAM ‘excellent’ rated, the building is designed to reduce heat build up from solar gain whilst optimising natural daylight. Heating and cooling is supplied by highly efficient condensing boilers and HFC-free ammonia and propylene chillers which serve 4 pipe fan coil units incorporating DC motors and low friction fans with heat recovery on local ventilation systems to reduce energy consumption.

A green roof absorbs solar energy and reduces rainwater run-off, some of which is harvested or recycled within the building. Even the choice of interior materials, from the recycled content of carpet tiles to timber from sustainable forests, has been chosen to maximise conservation while maximising waste and cost.

The rental value for this speculative office building is less than other Category A office developments in Sheffield. This is a remarkable economic feat for Vulcan House Steel, which proves that highly sustainable buildings can compete within the commercial property market.

The afternoon will incorporate a presentation on the project from

• Sue Haynes – UK Border Agency   • Edward Murphy – Mott MacDonald

• Will Nightingale – Drivers Jonas       • Stewart Mitchell – Hadfield Cawkwell Davidson

Followed by a guided tour of the building and refreshments.
