BCO Technical Tour – Dean Clough, Halifax

Dean Clough is a nationally renowed landmark site in Halifax West Yorkshire. At over two thirds of a mile long, it was once the largest carpet factory in the world but since 1983 has been celebrated as a model of economic regeneration. Today it houses over 100 companies who together employ a total of 3,500 workers.

Around the millennium Dean Clough embarked upon a tertiary stage of development aimed at placing its office provision firmly at the premium end of the regional market. The comparitively low-cost adaptation of mill buildings that served muster in the 1980’s (typified by suspended ceilings and conspicuously ducted services) has been substantially replaced; while a significant upgrading of the site environment (e.g. landscaping, car parking, recreation bays, DDA access etc) is now underway.

Besides accommodating companies that employ from 1 to 1,000 employees, the activities at Dean Clough include the arts, retailing and recreation and it has developed an appropriately flexible portfolio of spaces. It provides a model of how to capitalise on the quality of heritage building stock while sensitively introducing contemporary office requirements consistent with BCO standards.
