BCO Technical Tour – David Wilson Library, Leicester University

Timings: 16:00 – 18:00

Completed in April 2008 the library is expected to cater for over 22,000 students. When planning the project Associated Architects LLP focused on maximising natural light and the need for efficient storage of 1.1 million books.

They have extended the existing 1970’s library to meet with the adjacent Grade II listed Fielding Johnson Building. At this meeting point an atrium is used to create a central service spine providing the common support facilities and acting as a main route to the collections. It also encourages interaction by containing the staff help desks, IT training areas, library offices, a cafe and bookshop.

Designed to achieve an ‘excellent’ BREEAM rating it features low energy consumption, low embodied energy and renewable technologies. Natural daylight is exploited while avoiding unwanted solar gain to reduce the need for air-conditioning whilst those areas requiring temperature and humidity control, such as the special collection archive, are located below ground.
