1 New Street Square consists of fixed and flexible spaces. Movable walls, modular seating, and flexible MEP design allow spaces to be adapted as required. From small and cosy, to large and capacious, the majority of the areas can flex –so event spaces become social spaces, which become meeting spaces, which become working spaces.

Engaging with the core theme of connectivity in the brief, ID:SR designed a new seven floor staircase – made from timber and perforated patterned balustrades – to the base build, to encourage physical movement around the building and across teams. To improve the experience of building users, WC and cycle provision was increased, and MEP installed to support five new catering facilities.

With Deloitte’s London-based headcount continually fluctuating, the project had to be adaptable and have room to change in the future. Technology played a key role in achieving this futureproofing: the building’s sophisticated building management system constantly monitors and optimises how the open-plan office, cellular meeting rooms, and client suites are used. This allows the flexible workplace strategy to adapt to shifting headcounts and changes in the business’s structure. The ability for the space to adapt also supports the project’s sustainability strategy, with flexible elements allowing the function and character of a space to change without an overhaul of its design, and therefore minimising the expenditure of embodied carbon.

The refurbishment of Deloitte’s London Headquarters has created a new space for the business that drives efficiency, enables flexibility and improves connectivity between colleagues. The BCO judges noted the office helps Deloitte attract and retain talent, with improved amenities and smart technology integrated throughout. The judging panel were also impressed by the building’s sustainability and wellness accreditation, with the project achieving an outstanding BREEAM score and WELL Gold certification.
