BCO & NLA Breakfast Talk: Constitutional London – enhancing the heart of Westminster

One of the key pillars of the 2018 Government Estate Strategy, published in July 2018, is to improve the experience of those who visit the heart of Westminster. We will examine, for the first time, the Strategy and its future impact on central London.

In June 2017, NLA worked in partnership with Cabinet Office to host a special series of design charrettes to propose a future vision for Constitutional London – the area between Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square. The outcomes of this work have fed directly into the new Government Estate Strategy.

How can issues around signposting, traffic and pollution be approached to restore the area to a more welcoming and navigable place for visits, processions and celebration? With safety as the key priority, how can security and crowd control measures be successfully integrated into the public realm to create safe spaces for all? What effect will current and future projects being undertaken in the area, alongside other priorities including the Parliament’s Restoration & Renewal Project and the future Holocaust Memorial have on the area? What measures are being taken now to ensure a sustainable and joined up approach to these improvements?

This breakfast talk offers a unique opportunity to hear key stakeholders grappling with these issues, with discussion and debate around potential solutions.
