BCO NextGen Talk & Tour at Sutton Yard

The building comprises a beautifully refurbished network of historic warehouses creating new office floor plates and additional floor. The courtyard entrance, combined with the industrial architectural aesthetic which runs through the scheme, makes for a unique and impressive setting which continues through to the open plan modernised office floors.

Sutton Yard sits on the site of an old varnish and metal works. Metal work foundries, breweries, tanneries, engineering works and mills were all in close proximity and this industrial past still pervades modern day Clerkenwell with its numerous warehouse buildings and repurposed factories. Research on the history of the local area led to the discovery of Thomas Sutton, a notable philanthropist who founded many important local foundations and churches. Sutton was once regarded as the wealthiest commoner in England and, with his abundant riches, displayed an admirable humility and nobility with a careful distribution of his wealth.

In Thomas Sutton’s honour, the street now known as Northburgh Street was initially named Little Sutton Street. Sutton Yard is therefore named as such in homage to the original street name and more importantly the man behind its name, Thomas Sutton.
