Midlands Tour – BGS, Keyworth
The British Geological Survey sought to replace part of it’s office accommodation with a new building to improve space efficiencies, reduce maintenance costs and minimise energy usage. The resultant building is the first in the country to combine laminated timber frame and pre-cast concrete floor planks which also incorporate a Termodeck ventilation system. This system uses the cores in the concrete planks as a labyrinth to pass supply air through before being brought into the room through floor grilles. Clad in natural materials this building has achieved an Excellent BREEAM rating.
Working with innovative engineers, Pick Everard designed a building which visually expresses renewable materials for its structure and envelope incorporating an advanced ventilation system capable of providing user comfort through the peaks and troughs of the British climate.
Expertise was sought from BGS itself to assist in the selection of appropriate natural stone and aggregates to demonstrate the variety of stone types present in the British Isles. This includes; mountsorrel granite to form an external plinth; natural stone paving slabs in the courtyard; caithness slate flooring in the atrium; and an ETFE canopy.
