There is substantial evidence which demonstrates that both the design and the environmental quality of an office impacts on the productivity of its occupants.

The latest research from the BCO, Defining and Measuring Productivity in Offices, undertaken by Currie & Brown, examines how the physical design and management of offices can influence both individual and organisational productivity. It provides a definition of a productive workplace, how productivity can be measured and the steps that can be taken to make the most of available opportunities to improve performance. The findings of this research are presented in the first part of the seminar.

Session 2 of the seminar is dedicated to the impact of environmental qualities on productivity. In this section LCMB and Oxford Brookes University, together with their Consortium Partners (including the BCO) will outline their interim findings on The Whole Life Performance Plus project, a live research study supported by Innovate UK and the EPSRC. The study seeks to empirically validate the link between indoor environmental conditions and staff productivity, using a real-world intervention in three commercial case study buildings. The aim is for the tested solution to then be developed into a software-based platform that can dynamically control the indoor environmental conditions to maximise occupant productivity and comfort conditions, whilst minimising energy use and costs in commercial office environments.
