Guest Speaker: Rory Sutherland

Rory Sutherland

Rory Sutherland is the Vice-Chairman at media and ad company Ogilvy UK. After a spell teaching at a grammar school, Rory applied to a number of advertising and marketing agencies and was offered a planning role by Ogilvy & Mather. He was asked to leave the Planning Department and moved to the Creative Department instead as a junior copywriter. He worked on accounts including American Express, Royal Mail, and the relatively obscure software company Microsoft.

Despite approaching Microsoft with the idea of a system whereby people could share Office documents over the nascent internet and being roundly rejected, Rory went on to help found OgilvyOne, the group’s dedicated digital and direct agency. He remains an advocate of so-called ‘360 Degree Branding’ ensuring brands have a coherent, joined-up presence in all relevant media areas.

With characteristic wit and erudition Rory looks at the successes, the failures and the outright bizarre from the ad world. He analyses what branding means, what creativity is, and the value of persuasion over compulsion. In particular he looks at behaviours - as individuals and groups, consumers and employees - and how we often make the wrong decisions, or the decisions others want us to make. He considers how the potato was rebranded by Friedrich the Great of Prussia, the mysteries behind advertising, why the media is like food and why cheap, imaginative answers can often be better than expensive ones.

Social Media Giveaway: Star Light Count Guessing Game

For your chance to win a magnum bottle of champagne, simply guess the correct number of stars on the star cloth of the venue backdrop! We have a number determined, and if nobody guesses correctly, the closest guess wins. Good Luck!

How to enter:

Email your guess to events@bco.org.uk or comment on the relevant Twitter post.

Terms and Conditions:

By entering the Competition, you agree to be bound by the Terms and Conditions of the Competition. Entry to the competition is open to both BCO’s members and non-members. The correct number has been determined and concluded. Should no one guess the correct number, the closest guess will win. Entrants must be older than 21 years of age to enter. Entry into the Competition is free. No component of the Prize can be transferred or redeemed for cash. An entrant of the Competition must be an individual and not a company or organisation.

We will collect your personal information for the purposes of conducting the Competition. Prize winners’ names may be published in related newsletter publicity. Additional information about how personal information is collected, used and disclosed is available in the BCO’s Privacy Policy available at http://www.bco.org.uk/Information/Privacy-Policy.aspx

If a Prize is awarded by draw, all entries in the Competition will go into a random draw. The first valid entry randomly drawn will win a Prize. If the winning entry is invalid, that entry will be disregarded and the Prize will be awarded by drawing the next valid entry in accordance with these Terms and Conditions.

The final day to submit your guess is 7 January 2020. The winner will be notified by BCO on 14 January 2020. As above, if there is a draw (i.e. more than one entrant has guessed the exact number of stars correctly, or more than one entrant has guessed the closest number to the correct number of stars) all competition participants will be entered into a draw on 10 January.
